Professor Roelien Goede is currently President of the International Society of Systemic Sciences.
Academia and career
Roelien obtained a PhD in Information Technology in 2004 from the University of Pretoria, focusing her thesis on Systems Thinking in Business Intelligence. She also attended the Lugano Summer School in Systems Design in 2012 and has a Post Graduate Diploma in Higher Education. In her bachelor’s degree, she majored in Business Management and Computer Science.
Roelien is currently Director of the Research Unit for Data Science and Computing at the North-West University in South Africa. She lectures Database Optimisation and Unstructured Databases with Cloud Computing. She has a passion for teaching Computer Science, especially Programming. She has supervised 18 Master’s and 6 PhD students to completion and currently supervises another seven PhD students and two master’s students. Her research focus is on Critical Systems Thinking and she has published more than ten journal papers on critical systems thinking and the applications thereof.
Roelien's industry experience in programming and PhD work sparked an interest in philosophy – an interest she developed by attending the annual working conference in the Netherlands of the Centre of Philosophy, Technology and Society for a period of 10 years from 2002 onwards. Her focus on Systems Thinking lead to her involvement in the International Society for Systems Sciences, where she currently serves as President for term 2022-2023. This organisation promotes the use of systems sciences to understand and improve complex problem situations in all spheres of life. Until 2021, she was involved in a humanitarian project empowering Syrian refugees in the Netherlands and also in a project in India focusing on empowering women in the corporate world as project managers.
