Roelien obtained a PhD in Information Technology in 2004, focusing her thesis on Systems Thinking in Business Intelligence. She also attended the Lugano Summer School in Systems Design in 2012 and has a Post Graduate Diploma in Higher Education. She has a passion for teaching Computer Science, especially Programming. She has supervised 12 Master’s and 9 PhD students to completion and currently supervises another seven PhD students and two master’s students. Her research focus is on Critical Systems Thinking and she has published more than ten journal papers on critical systems thinking and the applications thereof. | ||
Roelien's industry experience in programming and PhD work sparked an interest in philosophy – an interest she developed by attending the annual working conference in the Netherlands of the Centre of Philosophy, Technology and Society for a period of 10 years from 2002 onwards. Her focus on Systems Thinking lead to her involvement in the International Society for Systems Sciences, where she served as President for term 2022-2023. This organisation promotes the use of systems sciences to understand and improve complex problem situations in all spheres of life. Until 2021, she was involved in a humanitarian project empowering Syrian refugees in the Netherlands and also in a project in India focusing on empowering women in the corporate world as project managers. | |||
From 2024, Roelien is working as an assessor for the Level 7 Apprenticeship in Systems Practice in the UK and visiting scholar at Nottingham Business School. Roelien is also involved at the University of Exeter's Apprentice program. | |||

Professor Roelien Goede iwas President of the International Society of Systemic Sciences in 2022-2023.
Academia and career
Roelien obtained a PhD in Information Technology in 2004 from the University of Pretoria, focusing her thesis on Systems Thinking in Business Intelligence. She also attended the Lugano Summer School in Systems Design in 2012 and has a Post Graduate Diploma in Higher Education. In her bachelor’s degree, she majored in Business Management and Computer Science.
