Over the course of his life, he has served as a Franciscan priest, high school teacher, inner-city organizer, social service administrator, real estate agent, homebuilder, contractor, and university professor. This diverse background shaped his later focus on complex human systems and interdisciplinary inquiry.
In 2001, Bausch was selected by Aleco Christakis, then President of the International Society for the System Sciences (ISSS), to co-chair the society’s annual conference in Crete. The conference theme, “Constructing Agoras of the Global Village,” inspired the creation of a nonprofit organization dedicated to furthering participatory democracy. This collaboration led to the founding of the Institute for 21st Century Agoras the following year.
