Gianni Di Marco has joined ISSS in 2021. His research focuses on systems thinking biases and resistance to change. He is also a trainer, consultant, and lecturer. Specialized in change facilitation, and group dynamics, he is a Certified Leader in Systems thinking, Mapping, and Leadership from Cabrera Research Lab, and a Certified GLP Coach & Debriefer from Global Leadership Associates. Gianni holds a PhD in Earth Science, and a CAS in Change Management and Leadership.
Personal Journey
Gianni is married with four children and lives in an old wooden chalet in the Swiss mountains. Fluent in French, English, Italian, with a grasp of Spanish and German, his Italian heritage and Swiss identity blend harmoniously, reflecting his openness, adaptability, and fervor for harmony and sustainability. "I cherish life's simple pleasures. I enjoy spending time at our family house in Southern Italy, savoring the food, wine, natural beauty, and warm relationships characteristic of Southern Europe. There, I find peace, engage in friendly exchanges, spend a lot of time in writing articles, or working on book projects, or relaxing, playing guitar or just quietly breathing."
"My life's goal for the years ahead is to contribute as much as possible to the necessary leap in the Humanity's Trajectory," he concludes. "We must transform our systems and habits to lessen our impact on the planet. Though the journey is complex and the outcome uncertain, I commit with all my strength, passion, and expertise to this 21st-century challenge, armed with the insights from my research and equipped with new insights from my research about systems thinking biases, along with methodological tools and training modules I've developed.”
Academia and Career
Gianni Di Marco is a visionary in cognitive and behavioral sciences, systems science, and transformative dynamics. His professional dedication in recent years has been to exploring the systemic nature of human thought and action. Based in Troistorrents, Switzerland, his career spans diverse fields including geology, business development, entrepreneurship, and professional diving, showcasing his adaptability, innovative spirit, and open-mindedness.
He holds a master's degree in Geology and Geophysics (1989) and a Ph.D. in Earth Sciences (1994) from the University of Lausanne, Switzerland, as well as a CAS in Change Management and Leadership from HEC Lausanne (2021). His professional certifications encompass adaptive communication, guiding transitions towards corporate social and environmental responsibility, vertical leadership development coaching, and systemic thinking, mapping, and leadership.
Gianni describes his journey as follows: "My career has led me through various roles in multinationals, startups, and the tourism sector. Leading change has been a constant, coupled with the challenge of fostering acceptance of transformation. Encountering resistance to change led me to delve into systemic resistance at individual and collective levels. As an independent consultant, I offer systems thinking, mapping, and leadership services, as well as leadership development coaching, change facilitation, group dynamics coaching, and lecturing. I also collaborate with the Cabrera Research Lab and Professor Derek Cabrera at Cornell University, in research programs dealing with systems thinking in complex adaptive systems. My first paper, 'Common Biases in Systems Thinking', marks a significant milestone in my research career.
Driven by the urgency to build a better, sustainable future, I challenge existing systemic models of consumption, problem solving, and decision making. I advocate for a holistic approach that respects the adaptive nature of complex systems, seeking unity and harmony in our world. Spiritually, I perceive this as a transformative cycle defining our existence and evolution. Humanity is like a garden connected to Earth, where we are both the fruits and the gardeners. Our duty as gardeners is to nurture and take care of this garden, not for ourselves, as it is only lent to us temporarily, but for future generations.”
Special Interests
I consider myself a multifaceted person. My 'earth' aspect is grounded in the warmth and stability of home and family. The 'water' facet reflects my extensive experience as a scuba diving instructor and guide, exploring the world's oceans. My 'fire' side is ignited by a fervent interest in cognitive and behavioral sciences through a systemic lens. Meanwhile, my mind often soars in the 'air,' seeking a deeper comprehension of those primordial patterns and universal dynamics that shape our journey as 'human-becomings'.
