Roelien is currently Director of the Research Unit for Data Science and Computing at the North-West University in South Africa. She lectures Database Optimisation and Unstructured Databases with Cloud Computing. She has a passion for teaching Computer Science, especially Programming. She has supervised 18 Master’s and 6 PhD students to completion and currently supervises another seven PhD students and two master’s students. Roelien's industry experience in programming and PhD work sparked an interest in philosophy – an interest she developed by attending the annual working conference in the Netherlands of the Centre of Philosophy, Technology and Society for a period of 10 years from 2002 onwards.
